About Me

  Zach is a jazz trombonist and composer based out of Wichita, Kansas. He has performed on the main stage of the Havana Jazz Festival in Havana, Cuba. His writing has been featured many times in Wichita, and also at the international JEN conference in 2014. He has performed with many artists including Matt Wilson, Dena DeRose, Jane Bunett, Clay Jenkins, and many others. Recently, he has begun studying for his masters in Jazz Composition at the award-winning University of Northern Colorado. Zach is a graduate teaching assistant here and has many opportunities to showcase his writing and playing. His most recent projects consist of several big band pieces played by UNC Jazz 1, having an original piece recorded by the Birdland Combo, playing on Cassio Vianna’s upcoming album, and playing in Denver with the Socrates Latin Jazz Orchestra.

Formal Education:

University of Northern Colorado: Pursuing MM in Jazz Composition, expected to graduate May, 2018. Friends University: BM in Trombone Performance with an emphasis in Jazz, degree earned May, 2016.

Private Trombone and Euphonium: Randy Crow, 2007-2012; Russel Widener, 2012-2013; Steve Slater, 2012-2016; Ryan Heinlein, 2015-2016; Dr. Nat Wickham, 2016-present. Private Trumpet: Jeff Gordon, 2014-2015. Private Composition: Dan Racer, 2014-2016; Ryan Heinlein, 2015-2016; H. David Caffey, 2016-present. Private Piano: Andre Reyes, 2014-2016.

Performing Experience:

Performed on main stage of Havana Jazz Festival in Havana, Cuba. Performed at the JEN (Jazz Education Network) conferences in Dallas, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Served as chief arranger and performer in the variety show, "Jazz, a KC Holiday Tradition" in Kansas City, Missouri. Performed on four professional studio Albums. Current freelance artist.

Experience Teaching:

College: Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Northern Colorado, directed the UNC (University of Northern Colorado) Smalls Jazz Combo including both graduate and undergraduate students at the 2017 UNC Jazz Festival; Conducted sectional for UNC Lab III trombone section; rehearsed Friends University Jazz Lab II. High School: Conducted masterclasses and clinics at several high schools in the Wichita and Kansas City Areas. Middle School: Taught masterclass to a class of 6th-8th grade trombonists in the fall of 2016. Private: I have privately taught Trombone, Euphonium, Trumpet, Beginning Piano, Composition, and Music Theory to a wide array of students ranging from children to adults.
