Steve Ma

Steve has played both upright and electric bass professionally since 1980. Steve's credits include Rock, Jazz, Blues, R&B, Classical, Theater, World Music and Big Band ensembles, in which he has performed everywhere from CBGB's to Lincoln Center.

Career highlights include a stint with the house band on Lifetime TV show Hot Properties, the Duke Ellington Band, Greek Music legend Dionysous Savaolpolis and Off-Broadway shows with award winning actresses Phylicia Rashad (Stormy Weather), Daisy Eagan (Little Prince).

Steve freelances around New York and plays regularly with The Flipped Fedoras, Jonathan Kalb, Susan Bach and the Wray band.

Steve teaches at the Bass Collective in New York City and is the author of several books for bassists: Developing Reading Skills for the Contemporary Bassists, and Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian Rhythms for the Bass. A new book Contemporary R&B/ Funk Styles for the bass should be out soon.
