I am happy to write on behalf of my former Berklee College of Music student, Victor, whom I have known since he entered my Writing and Communications class several years ago. Victor, because of his age and background, shared common interests with me as a dedicated educator and former school administrator. When he visited my office one day, we found we had much in common. In my class he provided other younger students with advice and insight only time and maturity, as well as life trials, can provide. He is a dedicated and hard working individual whether in a class or a job. I know this first hand as I have continued to keep close track of him over the last years as he has moved from Berklee College of Music, to Rose State College and then again to Cameron University. Over the course of those years we have maintained close contact and I have mentored him. Victor has tenacity, determination, compassion, and no matter the challenge, he maintains a sense of humor making me laugh. Recently, Victor visited me in my Needham Public Schools English position and worked with a couple of our choral director’s classes, a fellow Berklee College person. She came to see me afterwards looking to say goodbye to Victor, who was elsewhere visiting another music class. She reported how much she benefitted from having time with him. In their brief time together she realized something. She learned she could raise her expectations. Victor had modeled for her and her students, that by inserting into his comments and direction, how to read musical notations they could apply them to their vocalizations while singing. High expectations are what produce results. Excited, Sarah said she had “so much fun” working with Victor. I highly recommend you invite Victor to interview and hear his personal story of arriving here in the United States as he faced seeming insurmountable challenges to realize his dream of a U.S. education.
