Sara began on her music path very early in her childhood when she started singing in the children's choir at church. She was so small that the director made a special gown for her because all of the others were too large. Her father was a band director for 40 years, instructing Sara in piano, French horn, and general musicianship. She started taking private French horn lessons from professors and professionals as a freshman in high school. Sara was a 4 year All-State French horn and even sat 1st chair. She was involved in every honor band possible, took 2nd place in the Greater Des Moines Young Artist Competition, and won a scholarship competition to the University of Northern Iowa. However, she auditioned for CCM and was accepted with a partial scholarship. After building a family, Sara decided to go back to school to earn a Music Education degree from University of Northern Iowa. Her primary instrument was voice, with French horn as a secondary instrument. She also took piano lessons to keep her keyboard skills in check. Sara excelled in classical voice during her studies. At the beginning of her second year there, without prior classical training, advanced to the graduate division semi-finals of a NATS competition. Sara was a member of a select chamber group that traveled to 2 ACDA conventions; one in Miami, Fl and the other in Oklahoma City. Upon graduating from University of Northern Iowa, Sara moved back to Cincinnati and started working in the school system, giving lessons, and singing in the May Festival Chorus. She was selected as a member of their chamber choir and was featured as a soloist. She moved to Columbus, OH for a few years, while still teaching in the schools and staying very active in the music community. She played French horn in the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra and Dublin Wind Symphony (soloing as a guest vocalist with the latter twice), sang with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Chorus and was featured as a small group soloist, performed in pit orchestras for local high school and community musicals, and more. Sara is currently a vocal coach at the School for Creative and Performing Arts and is also teaching lessons in her home. Sara has played and sung under the batons of such greats as James Conlon, Jean-Marie Zeitouni, Rossen Milanov, John P. Payntor, Ronald Jenkins, and more.

In the first lesson, plan a few minutes of extra time to meet my dogs! I will get a baseline of your range/tone/technique and discuss my first impression observations with you. We will always cover breathing techniques/anatomy. I will teach you some of my warm-ups, while also telling you what they do. That is usually all that we get done in the first lesson. It's actually quite involved.
