Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Joseph, and I am a passionate music teacher offering violin and viola lessons at my private studio located in Richmond, Virginia. With over 20 years of experience playing the violin, I have developed a deep appreciation for music and a strong desire to share my knowledge and love for the instrument with others. Since 2016, I have been actively teaching music, and it brings me immense joy to guide students on their musical journey. As a young professional, I am enthusiastic about meeting new students and helping them achieve their goals while discovering the true joy that music can bring to their lives. I hold a degree in music composition, which has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of musical theory and structure. This knowledge allows me to provide my students with a well-rounded and holistic approach to music education. Additionally, I am a certified Suzuki teacher, embracing the renowned Suzuki method, and I have combined this approach with traditional teaching methods to create a customized and effective learning experience for my students. My teaching philosophy is centered around fostering a supportive and nurturing environment where students feel encouraged to explore their musical potential. I firmly believe that every individual has the ability to excel in music, and I am dedicated to helping my students reach their full potential. What to expect in my Orchestral Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

In my violin studio, you can expect a comprehensive and well-rounded approach to violin education. Here's what you can expect from violin lessons in my studio: Suzuki Method: Lessons will follow the renowned Suzuki Method, which emphasizes ear training, learning by rote, and creating a supportive learning environment. Students will develop technique and musicality through the Suzuki repertoire. Music Theory: A solid understanding of music theory is essential. Students will learn fundamental concepts such as notation, rhythm, harmony, and form, which will deepen their understanding of music and enhance their performance skills. Composition and Improvisation: Students will have the opportunity to explore their creativity through composition and improvisation exercises. These activities will foster their musical expression and encourage them to develop their unique musical voice. Active Listening: Developing an ear for music is crucial. Students will engage in active listening exercises to improve their musical perception, intonation, phrasing, and interpretation. Note Reading: Reading and understanding sheet music is a fundamental skill. Students will learn to read and interpret musical notation, enabling them to play a wide range of repertoire. Scales/Arpeggios/Technical Exercises: Technical exercises such as scales, arpeggios, and other technical drills will be incorporated into lessons to develop finger dexterity, bow control, intonation, and overall technical proficiency. Etudes: Etudes specifically designed to target specific technical challenges and musical concepts will be included in lessons to further develop technique and musicality. Repertoire: Students will learn a diverse range of repertoire from different musical periods and styles. This will expose them to various musical genres and foster their musical appreciation and versatility. Ensemble Playing: Students will have opportunities to play duets or participate in ensemble playing, which helps develop listening skills, teamwork, and musical communication. Music History and Terminology: Students will explore the rich history of music and learn about influential composers, musical styles, and cultural contexts. They will also acquire essential musical terminology to deepen their understanding and enhance their communication about music. Practice Skills and Habit Building: Students will receive guidance on effective practice techniques, time management, and habit building to develop consistent and productive practice habits. In my violin studio, the aim is to provide a well-rounded music education that nurtures technical proficiency, musicality, creativity, and a deep understanding and appreciation for music



Formal Education:

As a passionate and dedicated music teacher, I have acquired a strong educational foundation that enriches my teaching practice. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition from the esteemed Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at The Catholic University of America, which I successfully completed in 2015. This rigorous program provided me with a comprehensive understanding of music theory and composition, allowing me to delve deep into the intricate aspects of music and its creative processes. To further enhance my ability to educate and inspire students, I pursued an Associates in Music Education from Hagerstown Community College in 2010. This program equipped me with valuable insights into teaching methodologies and instructional techniques specifically tailored for music education. It provided me with a well-rounded approach to teaching that considers the unique needs and learning styles of individual students. Recognizing the importance of continual growth and development as an educator, I have also pursued specialized training in the renowned Suzuki method. In 2022, I earned the Suzuki Every Child Can Certification, which emphasizes my commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive learning environment for each and every student. In addition, I have achieved certifications in Suzuki Unit 1 in 2022 and Suzuki Unit 2 in 2023, further expanding my skills and knowledge in this highly regarded educational approach

Studied violin with Treesa Gold (2020-present): Current violin studies under the guidance of experienced instructor Treesa Gold, refining skills and deepening musical expression. Studied composition with Dr. Randolph (2015): Explored the art of composition and developed creative skills under the mentorship of Dr. Randolph. Studied composition with Dr. Robert Baker (2014): Expanded understanding of composition techniques and cultivated a personal musical voice with instruction from Dr. Robert Baker. Studied composition with Dr. Andrew Simpson (2013): Delved deeper into the intricacies of composition and expressed creativity through original musical works with Dr. Andrew Simpson. Studied composition with Dr. Steven Strunk (2012): Refined compositional skills and explored various musical forms and structures with guidance from Dr. Steven Strunk. Studied composition with Dr. Jason Lovelace (2011): Deepened understanding of composition and created complex and expressive musical compositions under the tutelage of Dr. Jason Lovelace. Studied composition with Dr. Stephen Gorbos (2010): Developed composition skills and explored different approaches to musical creation with instruction from Dr. Stephen Gorbos. Studied violin with Emil Chudnovsky (2): Refined technique and developed as a violinist under the guidance of Emil Chudnovsky. Studied violin with Jody Gatwood (2010): Gained valuable insights and contributed to musical growth through violin studies with Jody Gatwood. Studied piano with Dr. James Litzelman (2): Developed piano proficiency and expanded musical horizons under the instruction of Dr. James Litzelman. Studied voice with John Holland (2009): Developed singing abilities and refined vocal technique through vocal training with John Holland. Studied piano and voice with Korby Moss-Sanders (2008): Broadened musical skills and deepened understanding of piano and voice through instruction from Korby Moss-Sanders. Studied violin with Hilda Norton (2): Established a solid foundation and developed technical proficiency on the violin through private lessons with Hilda Norton. I have been regularly performing violin at weddings since 2010, and I have had the privilege of playing with the Richmond Philharmonic in 2019. Additionally, I participated in the Richmond Mozart Festival and Classical Revolution as a violinist between 2015 and 2016. During my time at the Catholic University of America, I was a member of the Symphony Orchestra as a Violin II player, and I showcased my vocal talents as a Bass Baritone in both the Chamber Choir and Singers. As an Assistant Concert Master in the Shepherd University Orchestra and later as the Concert Master of the Shepherd Summer Prep Orchestra, I assumed leadership roles and contributed to the orchestral performances. I have also participated in choral performances as a Bass vocalist in the Hagerstown Community College Choir and assumed leadership roles as the Drum Major and Clarinet Section Leader in the Williamsport High School Blue Band. In the All County Orchestra, I served as the Concert Master, showcasing my violin skills. Additionally, I played clarinet and bass clarinet in the All County Band. As a member of Lucas and the Lovelys, a Folk/Blues/Improv Band, I played the fiddle/violin, and I have served as a church musician, playing the violin and flute during worship services. These various performance experiences have shaped me as a versatile musician, allowing me to explore different genres and contribute to the vibrant classical music scene.     

Experience Teaching:

Teaching Experience: Violin/Viola Teacher-Private Studio (2016 to Present): I have been running a successful private studio, specializing in violin and viola instruction. I offer personalized lessons to students of all levels, helping them achieve their musical goals and fostering a deep appreciation for music. Violin/Viola Teacher-Music & Arts (2): I taught violin and viola at Music & Arts, providing instruction to students in a group class setting. This experience allowed me to develop my teaching techniques in a collaborative environment while ensuring each student received individual attention and guidance. Piano Teacher-Piano Keys 4 Kids Afterschool Program, Jamestown Elementary, Arlington, VA: I taught piano through an afterschool program, working with a diverse group of students in a classroom setting. I adapted my teaching methods to cater to different learning styles and created a positive and inclusive learning environment. Volunteer for Orchestra and Guitar Classes-North Hagerstown High School (2008): I volunteered my time to assist with orchestra and guitar classes, observing experienced educators and gaining insights into classroom management and curriculum development. I contributed to the students' musical education and witnessed their enthusiasm for learning. Throughout my teaching career, I have focused on providing personalized instruction, fostering a love for music, and helping students reach their full potential.
