Hello. My name is John and music is one of the biggest passions in my life. If I can help teach anyone else how to express themselves through music, than I would be beyond honored to be a part of that. I am one of the Worship Leaders at Hosanna Baptist Church in Poteet, where I play the keyboard, guitar, and sing. I have not had professional training in any of these areas, but I have been doing them for enough years to know how to explain it to others. I have been playing piano/keys for 19 years, and I have been singing and playing guitar/bass for 12 years. I love writing and creating my own music in any kind of genre I feel like creating; I do not like to limit myself or any of my students. My style of playing varies on the song, but I will say that Classical is not a strong suit for me. Also, for piano I do not teach how to read sheet music. My teaching will be more of scales, chords, music theory, and improvisation. My biggest goal as a potential teacher for you or your child is to make them better than me. A good teacher will not just start someone off and leave them, but give them everything they need to continue learning, and eventually teach others.

I have a BA in Theological & Biblical Studies, with a Minor in Music. Again, no classical or formal training, but Music Theory is a big part of teaching music, and that is an area I studied in while in college. I don't only want to teach what strings make what chord, but why it works that way. What makes it a Diminished 7th, or a Major2. These are all very important parts of learning guitar, and not just knowing how to play a few songs.
Private Education:
I've had several people teach me different things since I first started. A lot of it, though, was trial and error, self-taught, YouTube, or just having great mentors. I do not encourage this way of learning, because it takes a lot longer to really learn your instrument.
Performing Experience:
I have been in several bands including a punk rock band, a metal band, and I'm currently part of our church's Praise and Worship team. I've led worship since I was about 13 or 14 years old as just a musician, and finally moved up into being one of the leaders.
Experience Teaching:
For the last five years I have had the privilege of teaching Jr. High Students in Poteet as part of an After School Program. I taught guitar, piano, and how to read and play drum music for the School Band.
