About Me

Amalia was raised singing, songwriting, and farming in La Union, New Mexico. She began playing clarinet at age 12 in the middle school concert and jazz band, and continued to play throughout high school in both the concert and marching band. She was soon recruited to the Santa Teresa High School mariachi group where she further explored her vocal and performance capacities, and also began to play trumpet as well. Amalia went on to New Mexico State University where she focused on Music Education. During this time, she took up the trumpet on a more serious note and soon joined the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps based in Denver, Colorado where she marched for two years in 2. She later moved to El Paso, Texas where she is completing a Bachelor’s Degree in history with a minor in commercial music, clarinet studies, and Brazilian culture studies. Amalia has been performing since 1996 and has made it her goal as a professional musician to explore as many different genres as possible, including Klezmer, Balkan, Cumbia, Gypsy jazz, corridos, mariachi, Fronterizo indie modern pop, Bossa Nova, Arabic music, and classical music thus far. Amalia has participated in and created her own performing groups such as La Caravana, Fabulaa, Oussa Bossa, Frontera Bugalu, Fuga!, Sonido Cachimbo, Ribo Flavin, and Layali Al Sham, The Amalia Trio, and the latest The Chamanas. Amalia has worked nationally and internationally with a wide variety of artists and youths to aid the border arts community by providing free workshops and music lessons. Currently, Amalia is in a Fronterizo indie pop rock group called The Chamanas, which is on tour quite consistently, mostly in Mexico. Amalia has had the opportunity to work with big names such as Intocable, Los Angeles Negros, Enjambre, Yunuen Adolfo Viveros, and has had the opportunity to sing as an opening act with her band for Beach House, Zoe, and The George Clinton Band. Amalia has participated in SXSW, Vive Latino, Juarez Music Fest., Neon Desert Fest., and will be attending the Latin Alternative Music Conference in New York July 2016.

Review for Amalia

My name is Cristobal Rivera, I am the Program Coordinator for the El Paso Symphony's Tocando After School Community Music Project. Ms. Amalia worked as a teaching artist with Tocando from the early stages of our program back in September of 2013 through July of 2015. During Ms. Amalia's employment with EPSO and Tocando, she displayed a remarkable sense of community and a strong character - able to create strong bonds with her students and adapt to changes quickly. Ms. Amalia has a unique teaching style which makes her students feel at ease and have fun while learning both theory and technique. Ms. Amalia has played a crucial role in Tocando's success and continues providing support to our students by volunteering occasionally for special projects such as the "Terrific Trumpet Trio" in which three former Tocando students, led by Ms. Amalia joined our Strings Orchestra for a concert at the El Paso Museum of Art. Ms. Amalia has been a remarkable teaching artist with Tocando and I am convinced that she would be a great asset to your organization!
