About Me

I found my love of music unexpectedly, from my father.  Ever since then I have sacrificed almost everything I have in pursuit of making beautiful sounds.  I'm not the perfect, or most successful musician, but I care about what I do tremendously, and I aspire to virtuosity.

To me, music is a language.  Memorizing a song is like memorizing a Shakespearian sonnet or monologue.  If you could recite Hamlet to me, I would be impressed. However, If you could write something new, that excited me in the way that Hamlet has excited millions, then you would impress me far more, because you would no longer be regurgitating something someone else wrote.  You would not be reciting anymore, you would be speaking in your own voice.

I also believe that it is not my job to teach you.  It's yours.  It is merely my job to show you information, and you can do with it what you will.  But something that I have realized more and more as I grow up, and see movies like Good Will Hunting, for example, is that the teacher is the student and the student is the teacher, and that even the poorest of us, with almost no resources, can educate and better ourselves through sheer will alone.

I don't WANT to be a musician.  I AM a musician.  The difference is:  I can't help what I AM.  What are you?  Do you need to find out?

Michael Ch- has over 14 years of music experience in the Ashville area.

Michael Ch- is proficient in and teaches Guitar Lessons, Bass Guitar Lessons, Song Writing Lessons .

Formal Education:

I was the first and only jazz guitarist in the history of my High School. I briefly went to Appalachian State University where my love of music was constantly tested as people tried to shove classical music down my throat with smug grins on their faces, as if to say that the classical style was the only true and correct way of playing. I left to pursue my own style. Since then, I have been teaching and learning from private instructors and friends.

After leaving, I soon found that if I wanted to pursue a career in music, there were practical matters to consider. Music business is still business, so I began to study business. And the business of music is fueled by the science of Audio Engineering, so I moved to Fort Myers, FL to attend Unity Gain Recording Institute, from which I learned everything I needed to know about running Live Sound and producing quality recordings. I teach these other aspects of music informally.

Private Education:

I began by taking private lessons from my father, a hobbyist. I learned everything he could teach me in six months and thus began to look for a private instructor. Ever since I have been hopping from unofficial mentor to unofficial mentor. If none are available I peruse the internet to teach myself.

Performing Experience:

I have been performing, in various bands, ever since my mid teenage years.

Some of the bands I have performed in that you have probably never heard of: Two Layne Highway, Witness The Fitness, A Red Eyed Era, Adam and Evil, Denyed....

The list could keep going. But the point is that I have been on stage a lot, even though I have not found my perfect project yet. I also run live sound and produce my own music. Unfortunately I have no links for you at this time due to the fact that I'm trying to keep my latest work secret until it drops. However, I would love for you to hear my stuff! In the future I promise I will have links for you to better help you make your decision.

Experience Teaching:

I have been teaching since around 2004, formally, when I started my own business based on delivering lessons to people's homes like pizza. Apparently, Taylor Robinson had the same idea.

Informally, I have been teaching since about the age of 16. It seems that I am always one of the more knowledgable and talented of the musicians within my social circle, and so many times it falls to me to informally instruct as I am one of the few that understands music theory.

Teaching is interesting, indeed. It requires a lot of patience and understanding. However, at the end of the day, teaching yourself is so much harder. If you choose me as your teacher, I believe it will end up being a learning experience for us both.
