I have been playing music for 19 years, beginning on piano at age 4. Since then, I have learned the saxophone, guitar, drums, and bass, as well as cultivated a deep understanding of music theory. In the past few years, bass/bass guitar has become my primary instrument. Learning and playing music has enriched my life greatly, and I believe that can be true for you as well. I am grateful for all of the joy and satisfaction that music has given me and enjoy helping others experience the same. As a teacher, I place emphasis on helping a student determine what their personal goals are, and then tailor lesson plans to those interests. My personal experience has taught me that the best learning environment is one in which the student feels relaxed and involved. As such, I strive to maintain a comfortable, yet professional setting, and consistently communicate with the student about what they want to learn. Because each student's goals and interests are different, I do not use a specific curriculum. However, I intend to teach all of my students introductory music theory, fundamentals of sound science, and basic songwriting techniques. After several lessons, students will have a better understanding of music-making itself, as well as a clearer idea of what their musical goals are, and how to achieve them. I look forward to working with you and helping you realize your musical potential.
Formal Education:
I am currently attending the University of Utah and am in the process of completing a Bachelor's of Music in Jazz Performance (Bass). This program has greatly expanded my knowledge of music theory, history, and composition. It has also provided me with the opportunity to work with some of the best musicians in Utah.
Private Education:
I studied privately with a local piano teacher from age 4-16, focusing on classical repertoire. I currently study privately with Dr. Denson Angulo, the Jazz Bass instructor at the University of Utah.
Performing Experience:
I have been performing since a young age, and have participated in multiple performing groups over the years. Currently, I am the bassist for The Hot Club of Zion (jazz) and bassist/songwriter for the Merchant Royal (rock).
Experience Teaching:
I have held a regular teaching schedule for just over a year now, with 4-6 students per week. I have been offering informal instruction to friends and colleagues for nearly 5 years, covering music theory, songwriting/composition, music history, and piano/guitar/bass skills.
