I grew up in a musical family that a lot of times was compared to the Partridge Family. Many folks may be too young to remember the Partridge Family but, if you are, google it. I started out as a drummer at age 10 then switched to guitar at 16. I learned a great deal about how to play guitar from my dad, who was a professional performer, songwriter and recording artist and from a seasoned Nashville session musician named Steve Hostak who showed me my first 9th chord so I could play funky grooves in the style of James Brown! We were surrounded by musicians in my house because the family band toured regularly and we hired pro musicians to supplement our line-up. I remember once my dad being invited to Herbie Mann's (the famous flautist) house for a jam session. I took an accelerated music course in high school specially developed for myself and one other student by the band director and chair of the music department, Mickey Knull. Most of my early learning was guided by my dad who was a graduate of the Chicago Conservatory of Music and by self-guided study by reading books, playing in bands and learning songs by ear by listening to recordings and trying to figure out chord progressions, licks and solos. I spent a good portion of time doing that and trying to develop my ear.
Formal Education:
Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis with a minor in music.
Private Education:
Studied for a short while with Jon Herrington, present guitarist with Steely Dan who recommended me for a position in a band that was looking for a guitar player, studied with a jazz guitar instructor briefly (whose name I don't remember) in Woodstock, NY. Used several method books such as How to Play Rock Guitar by Pat Thrall, the Mickey Baker jazz guitar book (which I actually didn't complete, however), a book on ragtime guitar (can't remember the title or author) and countless lessons from Guitar Player magazine over the years.
Performing Experience:
I grew up in a musical family. My mom and dad were performers and I joined the family band at age 10 on the drums but switched to guitar at age 16. The band also included professional musicians from Nashville and we toured all over the US, the Bahamas and Europe. I played in a band in Indianapolis, IN with my 3 sisters called the Fabulous Starlettes and we toured all over the Midwest playing clubs, festivals, fairs and concerts. We were a main draw at the Vogue in Indy and actually broke the attendance record there one weekend. We performed lots of Motown tunes and many original tunes, which I wrote, and opened for acts as wide ranging as Ray Charles, Chuck Mangione, Bon Jovi and Joan Rivers! At one time, our bass player and drummer were Dane Clark and Jon E. Gee who now play with John Mellencamp as his backup band. The next band I played in was called the Gene Deer Blues band and was a blues band fronted by Gene Deer. We toured the Midwest and promoted his album Soul Tender and played a lot of fairs, festivals and clubs. We opened for Kenny Wayne Shepard at World Mardis Gras in Indianapolis. I played bass with Gene. I have also played with Alex Chilton of the Box Tops (of the Letter fame) at a Golden Years Reunion Tour with bands like the Turtles, the Spencer Davis Group and Procol Harum on the bill. I've also played with the World Music Percussion Ensemble of Dartmouth College, my own band, Factor X, that played a majority of music I have written and the one-man-band I am in presently that plays cover material but also a good bit of original music. I have a lot of experience playing for all kinds of crowds and venues from audiences of 10 to 100,000.
Experience Teaching:
I taught for a little while in Indianapolis at the Guitar Shop in Broad Ripple and have been teaching for 8 years at Blue Mountain Guitar Center in West Lebanon, NH.
