About Me
Hello, my name is Lawrence. I'm a 29 year old guitarist, singer and song writer. I've been playing guitar since I was 12 years old, about 17 years, singing 10 years and writing my own original music for 15 years. A major part of my guitar playing is based in improvisation and using songs that you learn in order to make up a new ideas or learn other songs with similar musical concepts on the guitar. I have taken a total of 5 years of private guitar lessons based in classical and Jazz music theory concepts, and I've taken a total of 3 years of private classical vocal lessons from 2018-current.

What to expect in my Guitar Lessons

Beginner -

Assessing your goals in music, what place does music have for you in your life, and what do you want to be able to do with music? The ability to read and write music notation. Music theory and Ear training fundamentals. Learning basic chords, rhythm, and melody on guitar. How to practice on your own to guarantee progress without a teacher. How to write your own musical ideas from scratch and develop your artistic sense on the instrument, including improvisation. You are never too young to do anything more difficult than beginner on guitar, but we want to get a few basics and fundamentals down so that you know how to approach learning songs or writing your own music.

What to expect in my Vocal Lessons

Beginner -

The student can expect an introduction to the vocal mechanism as an instrument, how it works. The voice is difficult because I cannot show you how to alter your vocal mechanism directly, we establish the fundamental basics of breath control, relaxed upright posture and allowing the resonance of the voice to come out. These fundamental basics are the continually revisited ideas that carry you from beginner to advanced, and always need to be revisited. We cycle through concepts and techniques and then practice letting go of those ideas so that you train your body and mind to be relaxed, yet aware of the vocal mechanism. Singing relaxed is the beginning and end stage goal for producing a healthy sound that will last your entire lifetime.

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons

Beginner -

Songwriting can begin at any level of musical ability. The sooner you start, the better you will become. The fundamental principals behind writing your own music and being a music artist is that there are no rules. There is indeed a formal way to teach songwriting, which involves a deeper level of understanding music theory and technical proficiency on your instruments of choice. I can share the beginning concepts that start you on this formal path of writing songs, formulaic songwriting, and I can share with you the more openly creative approach of using your ear and current knowledge of music. Even if it's very little, if you like music, you can be creative and musical. Bridging these two ideas together can help the student learn overtime how to be creative and confident with what they know on their instrument, or it can help them come up with new song ideas as they learn new music theory concepts along the way in their music journey. You don't need to know everything before you can sit down and write a song. You write songs along your journey as a musician because you have that creative passion and desire to create music as much as learn from your favorite artists.

Performing Experience:

I used to run an open mic circuit every week in North County SD for 1-2 years between 2, playing at venues like The Aztec Brewry in Vista, and what used to be the Glassless Minds open mic in Oceanside. I took MUS155A at MiraCosta college in Fall2023, which involved performing 4-5 group songs (YouTube link below). I've also performed in 3 concerts hosted by my singing teacher which involved working with an accompanist after learning 2-3 songs per concert. Overall, I am not shy to be on stage performing in front of many people. I can help with stage presence and some formalities depending on your goals as a performer.

Experience Teaching:

I do not have extensive experience as a formal teacher, but I love sharing knowledge and teaching anyone who wants to learn guitar or how to sing. I've had 3 students in my life, but never purused being a music teacher. Most of my teaching experience comes from teaching friends when we hang out together, or when having jam sessions with friends who are less experienced in music. My experience sharing knowledge over the years has helped me understand how to cater the lessons toward the individual's goals. I can teach music theory and how to read music, if that's the students goals. But depending on age and goals, I find the most effective method is to teach through learning songs that keeps the student engaged in the learning process.
