About Me
Harvey Chiles has been a musician since the 3rd grade. He was a public school music educator (preK-12), a university professor and performer. He has opened the Center for the Arts and Education in East Alton, Illinois in leased space at First United Methodist Church. He teaches from that location and also virtually.

Harvey M. has over 30 years of music experience in the Alton area.

Formal Education:

Harvey has undergraduate and graduate degrees in music from Bowling Green State University College of Music (Ohio). He has studied at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and taught at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University ( Bloomington) Indiana. His doctorate is in educational leadership from NovaSoutheastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Private Education:

Dr. Chiles has studied voice with Metropolitan Opera baritone, Walter Cassel, Dr. Donald Vogel (Eastman School of Music), and piano with Dr. Elizabeth Cobb (Yale University) and Jerome Rose (Mann School of Music NYC).

Performing Experience:

Dr. Chiles has performed in numerous musical theater performances and operas including 1776, Man of La Mancha, Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, Something Special (the world's first barbershop opera), and Puccini'sGianni Schicchi. As a conductor, his choirs have toured England Germany, Belgium, and Austria. As an author and composer, he has written numerous songs including Another Silent Night, Without You, From This Day On, and the children's play The Enchanted Hour and Without A Trace. He has been a soloist in numerous concerts and has sung as a church musician in both contemporary and traditional settings.

Experience Teaching:

Dr. Chiles has taught music to all ages and abilities for over 30 years. He currently is teaching music grades K-4 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School (part-time). Before that, Dr. Chiles was a noted junior high and high school choral director in Ohio, Indiana, and various churches throughout the Midwest. He recently retired as a church musician for the United Church of Christ. His choirs have won numerous awards locally and internationally. Dr. Chiles was an adjudicator for competitions throughout the Midwest and was awarded the Emerson Excellence in Education Award for his work as a university instructor.
