Rob is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator from Evanston, IL. He started playing violin at age 8 and discovered jazz at age 12. He received his undergraduate degree from Denison University, where he was the recipient of numerous awards in music and fine arts, including the first ever recipient of the Keith Boone Award for Fine Arts. In 2009 Rob received the Alternative Styles Award for Improvisation from the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). Currently he is a graduate student at New England Conservatory in Boston, MA.
Rob's musical experiences and expertise stem from a wide variety of styles: although classically trained he was encouraged to pursue improvisation, developing to be one of the most proficient jazz violinists on the scene today. He has attended Mark O'Connor's String Camp for the past five summers, and there he developed a passion for bluegrass and old time fiddle music. His tastes continue to expand outward, incorporating gypsy jazz, Brazilian music, hip hop, Indian classical music, and more.
Rob is a dedicated teacher and ASTA member. He now has a private studio of students in Boston, as well as teaches math and chess in other arenas. Jazz violinist and educator Christian Howes describes Rob: "He brings a contagious enthusiasm and positive energy into every activity or community in which he participates. He makes everyone in the room comfortable and happy."
