Alan grew up in Stephens City, Virginia where he started playing and teaching drum set professionally at age 16. One of his first significant jobs on stage was playing with the famed Harry James Orchestra at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival in 2003. Piano and guitar became his secondary instruments around age 17 when he began experimenting with songwriting. In 2005, Alan was awarded the Jazz Studies Scholarship from the University of North Texas to study drum set with the world renowned educator, Ed Soph. While at North Texas he participated in numerous ensembles including the 6 O' Clock Lab Band, Advanced Afro-Cuban Ensemble , Chamber Brass Band and Brazilian Ensemble. The keyboard and composition also kept growing into a major focus. Alan left the University in 2007 to do various freelance gigs in the DFW area, including performing, teaching and composition. In the fall of 2007, he was commissioned to compose original music for the computer game Wriggle Words by Big Fish Games Inc. Graduated from Sherando High School with an advanced diploma and a GPA of 3.8.
Awarded the Jazz Studies Scholarship from the University of North Texas.
Studied drum set with the world renowned Ed Soph as a part of the Jazz Studies program.
Studied music theory, aural skills, jazz ear training, piano, marimba and classical snare drum technique at UNT.
Private Education:
I have12 years of private drum set instruction behind me.
Also 2 years of private piano instruction and 1 year of private Marimba instruction behind me.
Performing Experience:
I've performed in many different ways. Including: Percussion ensembles, marching band (lead snare in drumline), Big Band Jazz Ensembles (Harry James Orchestra, UNT Lab Bands, sat in with the USAF Airmen of Note etc.), small group Jazz (freelance gigs, UNT forum groups etc.), Symphony Orchestra (Timpani and various percussion), Pit Orchestra for Shenandoah Summer Music Theater (Annie Get Your Gun, Carousel, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Pirates of Penzance), Advanced Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian Ensembles at UNT, and Original music in Rock, Funk and fusion with the groups Congratulations and the Conundrum.
I was also awared top 40 cover bands in the DFW area including blues, pop, rock, motown and funk styles.
Experience Teaching:
I've taught as a drum set instructor at the Blue Ridge Studio for the Performing Arts in Berryville, VA from 2003 to 2005.
Ran a home studio in Stephens City, VA of drum students from 2004 to 2005.
I was and am a Piano instructor for TRMC 2007-Present.
Piano, drum set, guitar, music theory and rock band instructor at Hall Music Productions 2008-Present.
