About Me

Michael was raised near Ovilla,TX. He grew up listening to everything from Mozart & Debussy to Amy Grant, Chicago, the Statler Brothers, Linda Rondstadt, the Eagles, and the Music Ministry of First Baptist Red Oak,TX. Michael's dad bought him a drumset at age 7, during which time he began to take drum lessons from Tom Van Schaik, the original drummer and road manager for the Dixie Chicks (now with Robert Earl Keen). Michael transitioned to guitar at 14 when he found that there were more performance opportunities available for a guitarist, and began writing songs and recording them on an old Fostex four track, playing guitar, bass, and drums on his own demos. Some of Michael's early songwriting idols was Wayne Kirkpatrick (Eric Clapton,Amy Grant,Garth Brooks),Joel Hanson (Lead Singer of PFR), and Steven Curtis Chapman. After a few formative years recording his own material and writing around 30 songs,Michael found that he was beginning to get writer's block and began to get more serious about guitar. He began memorizing guitar solos and parts from hit songs by hit session players such as Dann Huff,Brent Mason, and Jerry McPherson,a habit he continues to maintain to this day. He found that the players that he most admired had a knack for not only playing great solos, but playing other parts on songs that sounded like they were written into the songs as deeply as the words themselves,a role he began to relish as a kind of virtual co-writing effort. He soon began to teach guitar lessons to his friends who enjoyed having Michael teach them their favorite songs. At this time, he began to ingest his father's record collection, absorbing records by James Taylor,Boston,Chicago, the Beatles,Fleetwood Mac,and also jazz, modern rock, pop, and more. Michael has been involved in production /session work, teaching music, and music ministry for the past 17 years. He has backed major label artists Peabo Bryson, Gabbie Nolen, and Adrienne Lau (on her gospel album)on guitar,as well as playing on and/or produced countless other songwriter's demos for artists as Rick Tate,Bob Miller,Joe Harris, Jon Stricklin,Lance McKinley,Kathy Strawn,Justin Stone,Darla Hildebrand, and nationally known comedian Tim Hawkins, among many more. Michael has performed or recorded with the following notable musicians:Milo Deering(Leanne Rimes,Session King),Kyp Green(Dallas Jazz Orchestra),Dwight Watkins(Peabo Bryson),Art Greenhaw (The Lightcrust Doughboys),Warren Dewey(sessions),and Randy Wills (sessions),to name a few.

Experience Teaching:

I have taught lessons for the past 15+years. I have taught at the Dallas Baptist University Lab School,Advent Lutheran Church,Trinity Hills Baptist Church,Fellowship of the Metroplex,as well as at the homes of many of my students.
Over the past thirteen years, I have taught music lessons to students across the Metroplex ranging in age from age 6 to 55. I frequently work with the student’s favorite musical interests first, teaching them to play their favorite song or riff (if within their technical competency range)while referencing relevant theory and technique. I have worked with students with interests as diverse as Metallica, Darlene Zschech, Michelle Branch, Radiohead, Robin Thicke, and Miley Cyrus. I find after the student learns to play something in their area of interest, I have earned their trust to begin expanding their horizons to other, disparate influences and further study. Drawing on my experience as a capable professional musician, I clearly communicate the standards of excellence required to excel in the field of music in practical terms that music education truly deserves.
