Colin D.
Guitar Lessons, Vocal Lessons
Home
Hi, my name is Colin and I am a vocalist and musician from Lancaster, Pa. I have been a student of music for 6 years. My musical influences include jazz, pop, and singer/songwriter and I also enjoy heavy metal. My teaching style can best be described as thorough. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that I enjoy mulling over musical concepts. In my lessons, you can expect to learn music theory and the relationship between notes, chords, and different styles of playing. I like to tell my students that practice is key in any area of music. My favorite thing about teaching is to transfer the joy of music to others. I primarily teach vocals, but I can also teach guitar. My approach as a teacher is to accepting and being able to go at the student's comfortable pace. Thanks for taking a look at my profile. Hope to meet you soon!
Degree and Field of Study:
What to expect in my Vocal Lessons
In my vocal lessons, students learn how to critically listen to songs and break them down into manageable pieces to be sung. I will help in developing their ear when listening to songs to pick out melodies and harmonies to be sung. Students will learn how to warm up properly, practicing a multitude of scale exercises to find the balance of their voice and sing with ease. Students will learn about posture, breath control, phrasing and vowel placement while under my instruction.
What to expect in my Guitar Lessons
Students can expect to learn the fundamentals of music theory through the guitar. Basic chord shapes and the relationship to each note in the chord to the key that it is in. On acoustic guitar, students can expect to learn basic fingerstyle playing and learn how to break down chords without a pick and add percussion to their playing. Students will learn some complex jazz chords, covering major, minor, and dominant 7 chords as well as min, and maj, 9 chords. Students will learn how to mute strings to pay power chords for rock tunes as well as a variety of different scales that they can implement in their playing.
Formal Education:
I studied music at Millersville Univerisity and took both vocal and guitar lessons during my time there. I currently continue to take guitar lessons and I am the frontman of a 70s/80s rock cover band called Mauvestrom. I have taken voice lessons for many years and have mentored with my college voice teacher to become a better student in vocal practice and also a teacher.
Performing Experience:
Over the years I have performed in a multitude of theatre companies and held various roles within musicals. Most recently I have played Riff in West Side Story at the Ephrata Performing Arts Center in Ephrata, PA. I continuously seek out performance opportunities in the local Lancaster area and currently sing in a 70s/80s rock cover band based out of Millersville PA. I have been involved in chamber choirs in elementary school and in college as well.
