About Me
While I have always loved performing, having played over 20 full recitals on organ and piano, I only recently discovered a passion for teaching. You'd make such a great piano teacher!" was something I heard often in college. During four years as a performance major, I spent many wonderful nights coaching my friends in the recital hall or practice rooms. My excitement for the piano is contagious, and I want to share it with others, particularly young people who are just starting out in music. So many young students treat piano lessons as a burden and a chore--not because they want to, but because their teacher treats it the same way. I believe music teaching is suffering from a lack of passion. As a youngster, I had several piano teachers who had no enthusiasm for helping me, and that held me back for many years. I only experienced the joy music brings and made huge progress after I began studying with Dr. Karin Edwards. She showed me the power a good teacher has to influence students, and now I want to help others in the same way. My first real teaching experience came last year, when I began teaching a 15 year old organ student. That experience confirmed to me that I have a calling to music teaching.

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

Piano playing should be enjoyable! I help students explore the story-telling side of music. Every piece we play communicates a unique mood, feeling, or story to the audience--exploring and sharing that with others is exciting! I also place a lot of emphasis on technique--how we use our body to play the piano. Without the proper physical approach, we cannot play as expressively, as quickly, or as easily as we want to. That makes practicing and performing frustrating, rather than enjoyable. The solution is found in finger independence and good use of body weight. If we focus on "how does my body feel while playing?" rather than simply "am I getting the right notes?", we begin to play much more freely and expressively.
