15 Years
Saxophone and Singing Lessons Greetings! I am Stephen, Petersburg, VA native. I have a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Family, Child, and Community Service. My passion is helping youth, specifically in urban communities. I am currently continuing my education earning a Masters of Education in Education Administration and Supervision as well as working as a public school teacher. I have always loved music from an early age. I began playing the saxophone at the age of 16 and continued my education by taking several music courses at Virginia State University. While at VSU, I was a member of the Trojan Explosion marching band, jazz, band, and concert band. I was able to lead the saxophone section for several years as a section leader and first chair saxophone. While participating in the bands at VSU, I had the opportunity to play across the country at events such as the Honda Battle of the Bands, the Intercollegiate Music Association Conference, and the HBCU National Band Directors Consortium. My musical influences include James Holden, James "Saxmo" Gates, Kenny G, Kirk Whalum, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, and Adolphe Sax. My favorite thing about music is the power that it has to affect a person and my favorite thing about teaching music is helping someone to be great at what they love to do. I look forward to getting to know you as a student and learning about your specific goals, interests, and learning style. Book a lesson now and get connected right away!

I will arrive at your home or set location at a preappointed day and time each week. Material from the previous lesson will be briefly reviewed, then new material will be introduced. You'll learn exercises to develop playing technique and music theory knowledge as well as practical skills such as ear training, sight-reading and notation to give you the confidence to explore the style of music you prefer. You'll also learn how to play real songs, and your teacher will be happy to work your favorite music into the curriculum. At the end of the lesson, your instructor will provide you with material to practice before your next lesson.
