Matthew Y.

Matthew began playing woodwinds at the age of 15. Over the years, he developed his skills further by traveling across the country learning in premier music schools. He obtained a Master of Music in Jazz Studies with an emphasis in Composition from North Carolina Central University, and a Bachelor of Art in Music with a minor in the Music IndustrySound recording technology and music business from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. He is now enrolled as a doctoral candidate in the jazz program at the University of Northern Colorado. He gained performance experience in the Texas, North Carolina and Colorado area by playing at such venues as the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, the Texas Jazz Festival, the Jazz Education Network's Conference, the HBCU National Band Directors Consortium, and various other festivals and venues throughout the South and Midwest. He has had the opportunity to perform with and study directly under international performing musicians Branford Marsalis and Joey Calderazzo through the program at North Carolina Central University. Matthew has also had the opportunity to perform with names such as Bill Watrous, Butch Miles, Tito Puente Jr., Dr. Ira Wiggins, Nnenna Freelon, Robert Trowers, and Lenora Hammonds. Though Matthew can teach many different genres of music, his musical personal favorites are jazz, classical, pop, rock, funk, and folk which had great influence on his style of playing.
