What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons
I encourage students to bring pieces of music that they find particularly inspiring or that they particularly like, and I would teach them the techniques required to play these. If they are beginner students, then I would begin by teaching them how to read music, the basics of building the major and minor scales in any key, and basic triad chord structures. I also encourage both learning by ear and reading chord sheets. I believe that teaching improvisation off of chord sheets is one of the most effective and fun ways of learning improvisational techniques. I hope to create an atmosphere where my students can find the joy in playing and get them to the point where they feel as though they can express themselves fully through their music.
What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons
I would teach students the basics of music theory, including the circle of fifths, basic music history, basic counterpoint theory, and modal theory. Students must be willing to try, and show what they've made. My song writing lessons are very non-traditional, and I would like students to quickly develop a personal style rather than copying the styles of those before them. I will also ask students to do theory analyses of songs, some chosen by them, in order to get a better grasp on the particular sections and harmonies of music that express what the student is desiring to express.
Formal Education:
I am currently trying to pay my way through college. I am a mathematics major in my senior year with a minor in computer science and a minor in music. I am currently attending New Mexico Technical Institute of Mining and Technology for all of these things.
Private Education:
I have been independently studying piano for over 10 years, and I have been studying music theory and composition for 5. I am mostly self-taught, though recently I have taken some classes to shore up the holes in my formal music education.
Performing Experience:
I have performed for various churches across my life, mainly WoodsEnd Church in Edgewood, NM. I have been the regular pianist at WE Church for 5 years, and a reserve pianist for 8. I am very comfortable performing in front of others, and I can give tips and tricks to others to help them get into performing.
Experience Teaching:
I have very little experience teaching music. However, I have been a math tutor for friends and family quite often, and have been paid for this in the past. My clients have always been satisfied with my level of teaching and engagement.
