Shane is commited to sharing music, and introducing the viola to ever widening audiences. As a teacher, Shane's pedagogical goals are to provide his students with the technical skills to express themselves musically and to instill a life time love of music.
Shane is a native of Easton Pennsylvania, and began playing Violin in a public school music program at age seven, and switched to Viola at age twelve. He is currently a student of Karen Ritscher (Associate Professor of Viola, Oberlin Conservatory), and has had additional lessons with faculty members of the Curtis Institute, the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and some of the foremost violists concretizing in the world today. Shane has given Philadelphia premiers “Seven Last Words” by Julia Alford Fowler, “Coquette” by William Dougherty, and Ronan Mariano’s first Viola Sonata. An avid chamber musician, Shane is a chamber music student of Helen Kwalwasser, and is a member of the Philadelphia Harp Trio, The Easton Arts String Ensemble, and as a member of various graduate chamber groups as a student at the Esther Boyer School of Music. Shane was assistant principal viola of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, is an 2004 alumni of the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts, attended the Performing Arts Institute at Wyoming Seminary, Music in the Mountains PA, was accepted to the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and has performed as guest artist at the Princeton Chamber Player’s Play Week, where last summer he gave a lecture on avoiding overuse injuries. Shane is on the faculties of the Temple University Community Music Scholars Program and Studio on Walnut. Shane performs on a Sergio Peresson Viola, made in 1972.
