Hi, my name is Sarah and I am a Cellist majoring in Music Education at the University of Akron. I have been a student of music for the past 10 years of my life. When I was young I took a lot of inspiration from my mother, who used to play piano for me growing up. Since then I have greatly looked up to legendary performers such as Yo Yo Ma and Rostropovich, and especially my own teachers throughout the years. My teaching style can best be described as student-motivated, since I strongly believe that the most work comes from the student. My teaching philosophy is to teach the student not how exactly to play and what to play, but rather, to enforce healthy and effective practicing habits so that the student can freely express music in the way they choose with as much technical ease as possible. In my lessons, you can expect to learn how to develop the technical skills needed to make playing the instrument as fun and beautiful as it possibly can be. I like to tell my students that my work as a teacher is only as effective as their work is as a student. Without practice, nothing a teacher will teach you will make a student magically improve. Lessons are a collaboration between student and teacher. I primarily teach cello, but I usually incorporate basic music theory into the lessons.
