About Me

Hi, my name is Benjamin and I have been a performing musician in all styles in the DFW since 2001 and have taught professionally in the area since 2015. My primary instrument is the electric bass guitar but most of my students up to this point have actually been for acoustic, classical and electric guitar. I also play and teach drums and percussion, piano, and can teach ear training, music theory and songwriting/composition. I also compose music in a variety of styles for multiple instruments. I have an Associates degree in the Arts from the Dallas County Community College district, studied jazz and classical performance at UTA, and earned a Bachelor's degree in Art and Performance from UTD. My focus as a teacher is to identify the specific personal goals of each student and tailor their lesson accordingly. While I believe this is the best place to begin, in order to ferment growth as a musician I will gradually work to expand my students' goals beyond their original intent. Assuming the student shows promise and, more importantly, motivation and willingness to put in the work, the intent is to bring the student to levels of success even greater than their original goals. As a music educator I strive to maintain a balance between teaching music as a science and as an art. I will stress the importance of having at least a basic understanding of reading music, music theory and ear training, but only as a part of a greater whole. I believe that emotional impact, on the performer, and from the performer to the audience, is the most important aspect of music by far.

Benjamin M. is proficient in and teaches Guitar Lessons, Bass Guitar Lessons, Keyboard and Piano Lessons, Song Writing Lessons, Orchestral Lessons .

What to expect in my Orchestral Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate

As a music student at UTA I had the opportunity to perform on the upright bass in the symphonic orchestra and nearly every jazz ensemble available. I can teach the fundamentals of proper bowing (French bow) and fingering technique, and get a student well on their way to succeed in both the classical and jazz idioms on double bass. Anything imparted during a classical or jazz double bass lesson can be used to great effect in any of the other musical styles listed here and more, including but not limited to: folk, blues, pop, etc.

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

When it comes to composition, I put a high value on understanding at least some music theory and a strong emphasis on ear training. How do you put what's in your head out into the world? Well, a big step towards that goal is to understand the general rules and conventions of theory and pitch-matching. In addition to the theory side, lessons will also involve coaching in song structure and lyrical style. Your song is always your own, I just want to help you find it.

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I focus on individual goals first and growth beyond those later. I can take a student as far as they would like to go, and will encourage my students to strive for even greater output than their original goals may have been at the beginning of our lessons together.
