Dom F.
Keyboard and Piano Lessons
Home
6 years Years
I am a scholarship student at James Madison University studying under Dr. Eric Ruple and working towards a bachelor’s degree in piano performance with hopes of going to graduate school in conducting. My interests in music are eclectic, ranging from the early keyboard composers Bach, Bull, and Gibbons through modernist composers such as Thomas Ades and Elliot Carter. I also advocate collaborative pianism; I am working with JMU university choirs under the collaborative artists scholarship and will continue to collaborate with them until I graduate in 2020. I feel that through teaching, I can help encourage students to think through a problem rather than being given the answer. This critical thinking skill is an important skill to have as a pianist. Besides all of my musical interests, I also enjoy ice cream and Netflix (and the combination) and playing dungeons and dragons with my college friends.
Dom F. has over 6 years years of music experience in the Harrisonburg area.

What to expect in my
Intermediate and advanced students are expected to come to lessons prepared to play a passage of an assigned piece of music. The expectation of degree of self learning will be that the student should be able to play hands alone with musical sense. Students are encouraged to come with questions about a piece of music, a passage of music, or technical questions. Furthermore, an increased emphasis will be given on technique. Students will, given time, be able to play all major and harmonic minor scales, major and minor arpeggios, and Dominant 7th and diminished 7th arpeggios. In the average hour long lesson, a student should expect to play a few scales in a lesson. A student should also be prepared to play through a piece they have learned (hands alone or hands together).
What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons
There will be a focus on building basic technical skill: solving basic fingering issues, learning to read and play the correct notes on the keyboard. The student should. Be able to learn hands alone of music with the expectation that, given time, the student will be able to put hands together. Time will be spent on teaching the student a proper practice method. I feel that this is an area where a great many students struggle.
