Having been a professional musician for over 12 years, singer, composer, and keyboardist Christopher has truly come into his own as an artist. Though his music career all started at a younger age, he developed throughout his high school years participating in Louisiana Regional and Louisiana All-State Choir as well as attending the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts during a summer semester in Vocal Performance. While attending, University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, he also completed the International Baccalaureate curriculum in Music Studies, while furthering vocal Instruction with teacher Skip Harris and teaching himself the piano. He has studied vocal styles in blues, soul, R&B, funk, jazz, rock, Opera, and classical music. Since arriving in New Orleans in 2011, he has since toured the country with funk/soul group Gravy whose latest release Get Busy Living, produced by Robert Mercurio and Ben Ellman of Galactic, was reviewed with acclaim by Offbeat Magazine. He started teaching voice lessons not long after the recording process, gaining experience at his own private home studio, and continuing his education by being an Associate Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing NATS. Today, Christopher continues to teach, write, and perform. Having his own band to lead, Retrofit, the group recently released their debut EP entitled Be Easy that was written and produced by the lead singer. He has also made appearances with notable groups such as Gravity A, Particle, Burris, Midnight Riders, The Low End Theory Players, Strange Roux, and more as well as being a regular member of the We Are The 9 Singer/Songwriter Series. Christopher is just another rising talent in the New Orleans music scene.
Christopher D. has over 2.5 years of music experience in the New Orleans area.
Christopher D. is proficient in and teaches Keyboard and Piano Lessons, Vocal Lessons, Song Writing Lessons .Degree and Field of Study:
What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons
I teach mostly beginner piano. My students learn basic technique, music theory, and simple songs. I like to focus on students learning with their ears along with music theory to get a full understanding of how music works. Depending on the purpose of the student, I will either focus on chords for singers who want to learn to play and sing or on scales. I teach proper fingering for both. Muscle memory to me is vital to learning your instrument properly.
What to expect in my Vocal Lessons
Vocal Lessons are my main focus with teaching. I can teach any style, level, or age. Each lesson is very much dictated by the students level, but i like to emphasize proper breathing techniques, pitch development, home exercises and a couple songs for adults right off the bat. Getting muscle memory going. For kids, I use less warm up time and fun activities such as animal sounds to make warm-ups more interesting for them. I also like to have 2-3 songs for kids to learn focusing on pronunciation, fluidity, pitch, and basic musical concepts such as rhythm, tonality, phrasing, timing, solfage syllables, etc. For both adults and kids I like to have an easier piece that establishes confidence and works on a students strength as well as a difficult piece that works on the students weaknesses.
What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons
I have helped many friends in the songwriting process. Having learned much of what I know about songwriting from local musicians like Robert Mercurio and Ben Ellman from Galactic, I love sharing the knowledge I have with others. My biggest thing with songwriting is using the basic tools and guidelines songwriters have used for generations, while highlighting the songwriters authenticity and honing in on a style. The style can be your own or a fusion of styles, but the song needs to have a clear direction, audience, theme, and flow.

Gravy, “Get Busy Living” Independent AUGUST 30, 2017by: FRANK ETHERIDGELEAVE A COMMENT 52 Gravy announce a new sound, a new vibe, on this stellar recent release with blissful authority right from the start: The filthy old-school funk groove of opening track “Uptown Getdown” explodes into a masterful digital mix right as lyrical imagery of Carnival, love and “lonely grey days” begins. Next, the uptempo, sun-is-shining pop of “looking for fun” in “I Should Be the One” is bouncy and infectious in the mold of groovy-soul stalwarts Jamiroquai—a far cry from the blues-based guitar-driven rock that has defined the quartet since its 2004 inception. Gravy’s maturation comes perhaps best explained in a promo video check YouTube for Get Busy Living via interviews with producers, Galactic’s Robert Mercurio and Ben Ellman. Interspersed with clips from Gravy’s rowdy shows, Mercurio acknowledges the 11-song album’s “emotional sensibility” while Ellman says it’s a strength “having the openness to change your sound, explore the studio, paint a different kind of picture from what you do live.” gravy This praise from the intrepid producers helps explain the switch to primarily keyboardist Chris ’s upper-octave vocals, harmonious and captivating throughout, with his hypnotic oozing of the 88s propelled atop buoyant rhythms courtesy of Aaron Walker drums and Marcus Burrell bass/vocals. Guitarist Stephen Kelly unleashes a raging riff to reveal the blistering blend of rock at Gravy’s core for the intro to “Hear You Say,” a tune returning him to his familiar lead vocal spot. Kelly delivers a delicately smooth solo at the bridge in “Gone Blind” before the “we live in a subliminal daydream” vocal refrain. Dreamy sonic waves drive “Ribbon,” future dub flourishes on “Includes,” while the poetic party-girl lament of “Fifty Cent Ways” reflects an urgent emotional ethos—“get busy living, or get busy dying”—that informs this powerful, yet party-friendly, album.
