About Me

Hamilton is a multi-instrumentalist/vocalist with a fresh, practical approach to teaching, based on his 28-year on-stage perfoming experience. "Everything I share with students, I get them to apply it directly in the songs they love, which not only shows them how things work musically, but also keeps them excited and motivated about learning music." Fronting his own band for 20 years, writing/arranging songs, and performing them all over the world has given Hamilton the insight into applying music concepts into real songs, and real musical situations. Hamilton is an accomplished guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, harmonica player, songwriter, and vocalist. In addition to his stage experience, he has a BA in Music Performance from St. Thomas University, as well as a BA in Communications. He has taught private lessons, group lessons, workshops, and youth music camps since 1998. Hamilton tailors his lessons to each student, according to his/her own goals and musical tastes. "I like to get to know my students and find out what/who they like musically, then use that knowledge to demonstrate the things we're working on so they can hear it in action. If students want to write their own songs, we apply what we've learned to their songs too."   PLEASE NOTE: Hamilton is a gigging musician and works almost every weekend, so weekdays/weeknights are when he is available to teach.

What to expect in my Song Writing Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

There are no rules for songwriting! I can show you how to take everyday inspiration and make it into a song. I can help you come up with memorable melodies for your songs, lyrically and musically. I can be someone you can bounce ideas off, and critique your songs if you would like honest feedback.

What to expect in my Vocal Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I've had tons of stage experience singing lead in blues and soul music, and I can share tips on how to project your voice, yet also how to sing efficiently without damaging your voice. I can help you with your phrasing, and even help you develop your own vocal style as a producer would do. I'll show you that having a great sound or style to your voice is more important than being able to sing fast technical runs. I can also help with confidence, which is SUPER important, no matter what genre you prefer.

What to expect in my Keyboard and Piano Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I specialize in playing keyboards by ear. Most of us myself included learn piano from sheet music FIRST...but I like to try to get students "off the page". This is especially essential for blues. I can show you practical, useful chords and inversions that are used in blues, rock, and pop music. Also, I can give you tools to be able to take solos and improvise on keys.

What to expect in my Bass Guitar Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

Bass players get the most gigs, right?? Having done countless recording sessions on bass, I can show you how to play tasteful basslines that compliment songs, and improve your timing. I can show you how to do effective walking basslines in blues and jazz, and how to read chord changes handy for jazz gigs. I love to apply what we learn to your favorite songs, and we can use as much or as little theory as you're comfortable with!

What to expect in my Guitar Lessons

Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced

I specialize in chords, rhythm playing, and soloing. I can teach you about chord variations and inversions that can give different and fresh options in your rhythm playing, especially blues playing. I can help with soloing ideas, the art of phrasing, and how to not let “scales" keep you in just one position. We can use as much or as little theory as you're comfortable with, and apply what we learn to your favorite songs or even your own songs!

Review:

Wow!!!

I am so pleased with my instructor. Our first lesson blew my mind. I'm so excited for the rest of lessons and I have the highest confidence that my son will be playing effortlessly soon. Hamilton is amazing. He is exactly what my son needed all these years. He is so talented, and knowledgeable. I can go on and on but in one word. Awesome!!! - wrote on Wed, 20 Oct 2021
